At level 18 and 38 you get the chance to get a new job if you touch a mana stone. The choices you get the second time you are able to change jobs depend upon what choice you made the first time you were able to change jobs.

Broadly, this is a game that really rewards multiple playthroughs, so you can experience the different stories and different characters for yourself. So you should hopefully be thinking of this not as your only playthrough, but just as your first. The whole system is complex enough that I'd strongly suggest reading some FAQs - definitely this one -, and it's worth it to at least browse the rest. And if you really want some insight into the underlying concepts and strategies of team-building in this game, this is a very good one -.Briefly:Duran - very strong physical fighter, can have some decent though not outstanding support and healing magic, the closest thing to a canon main character the game provides.Angela - very strong magic-user, but predictably very weak physically.Hawk - agile jack-of-all-trades - can be either physical or magic, has some unique and powerful attacks either way but tends to be a little weak since he's more of a generalist.
Can be very powerful, but you have to know how to use him to make the most of him.Lise - probably the best character in the game - like Hawk in that she's sort of a generalist, but she's stronger in all respects and easier to use effectively.Kevin - pure physical fighter - can't cast his way out of a paper bag, but beats the living crap out of anything that gets close to him. Can turn into a werewolf and get even stronger physically and even less able to do anything else.Carlie - classic healer. Has some decent offensive magic and can melee fight okay (better than Angela at least), but really excels at healing and support magic. There are three main paths through the story, shared by three pairs of characters - Duran and Angela, Hawk and Lise and Kevin and Carlie. They're not identical stories, but they converge fairly early and overlap a lot. And if you have any of those pairs in your party, you'll get some unique, though not really significant, dialogue. The overarching story is the same regardless of who you pick.Strategically, the most important decision is whether you want to focus more on magic or on physical combat.
Angela is really only good for magic and Kevin is really only good for physical combat, so choosing them depends on that. Duran, Lise and Hawk can go either way, so which way you go with them depends a lot on which you focus on. Carlie is pretty much a healer no matter what.Probably the most straightforward combination for a first playthrough is Duran, Carlie and Lise, in that order. So long as you stick to a broad focus (so generally don't put Angela and Kevin in the same party), you really can't go wrong though, so if there's a character that interests you and that you want to use, go ahead and do it.Really though, browse the FAQs. When you get right down to the nitty gritty of building a team, there's so much important information - far more than anyone could cover in this thread. Ah.Broadly - if you want to get into the fine details, it gets very complex in a hurry - far more so than anyone could possibly deal with in a thread on Reddit. On the other hand though, when it gets right down to it, you can't go terribly wrong.
Really, any combination can work - some are arguably better or worse, but an awful lot of that just comes down to personal preference. For instance, I note that another poster suggested Kevin, Angela and Hawk. IMO, that's a terrible combination - absolutely one of the worst possible. But I don't doubt that it works, and might even work well for that particular person and their approach to the game.I suggested Duran, Carlie and Lise. I wouldn't be surprised if, given enough time, someone were to come along and tell you to not use that combination, because according to the way they approach the game, it's terrible. And so on.That's why I suggested the FAQs - because really it's something that you have to work out for yourself. If you just follow someone else's suggestion, then you're following something that appealed to them because of the way that they approach the game, but there's no telling if it'll actually appeal to you or not.Without that, I really think you're better off just doing whatever appeals to you (or maybe more importantly, letting your daughter do whatever appeals to her). You can make it a bit easier or harder for yourself with your choices, and we the internet can argue until the end of time over which choices are 'better' or 'worse,' but you really can't go all that far wrong, so you might as well just use characters who interest you (or your daughter) and just see what happens. It'll all work out in the end, pretty much no matter what.
Characters have 'specials' with levels of 1, 2, and 3. Your first class change gets you level 2 specials, and your second class change gets you level 3 specials. HOWEVER, enemies later on in the game also punish you for using Lvl 2 and 3 specials. These punishments really, really hurt, meaning even you have these awesome looking Lvl3 all screen hitting special move, that's a disastrously bad idea, as every enemy on screen will then respond with a hard counter. What doesn't trigger counters is Lvl 1 specials, and buffs on your own team.
That makes certain team combinations and class combinations a bit easier to play than others. Attribute buffs are important, as I recall some really annoying boss fights. Weapon element magic (light saber, etc.) is also useful for certain boss fights. Also, keep in mind that because it's a three party system, choose classes not just in terms of solo power, but benefits to the team. Some notes:. Lise is probably best off as a Star Lancer class because of attribute up magic, a summon with a silence effect, and just a good secondary damage dealer and tank. Kevin can form the core damage dealer of any team. The problem is his hardest hitting moves are level 3 all screen techs which then trigger counters.
His God Hand class is probably the safest class for your first playthrough, but the other ones are good if you are careful about when you use their Lvl 3 techs. Hawk requires a bit of micro, because he combines a bit off good damage ability with good skills. The problem is some of those skills can trigger counters.
In general, I find the Nightblade class the general safe choice, as long as you don't spam his Lvl3 tech and get countered. Wanderer can also be useful, but it requires you to be use those skills effectively, which is a bit micro intensive.Duran, Angela, and Carlie are tricky. If you pick them as a first character, it can be a bit tricky too.For a first playthrough, I suggest picking Lise or Hawk as first choice. The Hawk - Kevin - Lise team is pretty strong. Having either Kevin or Lise on your team is probably a smart idea, whatever three characters you pick.If you want to fight the optional boss, you need to pick Duran or Angela though. I don't recommend picking Carlie on your first playthrough.
Ok sorry I wasn't sure how much info you wanted. My favorite character is Carlie, who fits the role of healer well, especially if you choose her light classes. I'd recommend pairing her with Duran or Kevin, both of whom are good attackers. If you have Carlie, you don't need to do Duran's light classes because you won't need the healing. For your third character, it's definitely up to you. As I mentioned, I thought Lise was super helpful as a support character as she can give stat boosts.
Angela could be good as well, if you wanted more magic. We are still in the process of playing the game but I would tell you to pick a matching pair and then one more useful character. The classes change the colour palette of the characters so I thought of that when choosing, too.We are complete noobs to the game and this is not meant to be a good suggestion, but I could tell you what we did if you want to know.My sister and I decided that Hawk looked cool so we picked his 'partner character' Lise and then picked Carlie because she was cute and could heal us in our first playthrough.
We made Hawk really speedy and lucky, Lise physically strong and bulky, and Carlie, more magically strong. As for classes, we did some reading and decided the following:Hawk: Dark - Light.Lise: Light -Dark.Carlie: Light - Light. But I really don't think you can go so terribly wrong that you would get stuck. There is a ton of theorycrafting on the gamefaqs SD3 board. Check it out if you have time.I havent played the game in years so I dont remember specifics. But broadly, melee is the strongest and most fun.
You can find the black market early on to buy items that replicate spells (including group heal and all buff spells), so you dont really need to go heavy into spell support if you don't want to. The best character is probably Kevin because he has the strongest and fastest melee by far and even gets heal spells, you can probably solo the game with kevin.
Hawk and Lise are probably 2nd best, with hawk having an edge in melee with his double attack while lise has an edge in spells with a wide variety of buffs, though both have good melee and good spells, they are both jack-of-all-trades types. Duran is a paladin, ok melee but pretty slow and has support spells. Avoid Angela and especially Carlie, Angela can be good but you have to spend a lot of time in the ring menu spamming attack spells which I find boring, while Carlie the healer is just dead weight since there are so many other ways to heal that dont involve being saddled with a character who does 1 damage to everything. A party of Kevin+Hawk/Lise/Duran (pick 2) is a really good time, you have no problems with offense as they are all melee monsters, and light kevin/duran can heal while lise/hawk have good buffs/debuffs.Once you pick a team you really should look at gamefaqs for the class upgrades.
Its pretty complicated. But everything is pretty good and like I said all you really need to get through the game is some strong melee characters and the black market items. One thing to note is that the story changes depending on your 1st character picked. It doesnt matter for the gameplay at all because you can switch, so pick the one you like the most to be your main character even if their playstyle isnt your favorite of the 3. Its pretty much the same across characters, there's no path where you get more insight on the story. What i might recommend is play the first 10 minutes of each character up until they leave their starting area and start the first real level. You get introduced to their story and their villain who will show up throughout the game. Pick the character you like the story of the most.
There isnt really a canon choice and the story is pretty forgettable anyway. Personally I like hawk the best but its really up to you. Really making me reach into memory here. For kevin I think his best class is God Hand. That is the Light-Light upgrade. This gets one of the strongest melee in the game, very powerful spells (one to improve his power to werewolf form in day, and another to instantly fill special attack bar), and even healing spells. You cant go wrong with that class. Alternately, you can do Warrior Monk which is Light-Dark, which is less powerful but you can multitarget heal.
Good if you really dont want to ever use items to heal. For Lise, I would think Star Lancer is her best. That is Light-Dark. The main benefit to this class is that aside from being strong, it gets multi target buffs so you can quickly power up your whole team, and a really useful summon that silences enemies. For Hawk I guess I would recommend Nightblade. That is Dark-Dark.
He gets very strong attacks, and some good debuff spells to use against bosses. You can also try Ninja Master, which is Dark-Light, which is less strong but you can multitarget his spells, though its not that useful. That team would be pretty well rounded.
All characters have very strong damage. Kevin heals, Lise buffs, Hawk debuffs.
The only thing you would be missing are elemental sabers and multi target healing. Both can be gotten from black market items.
When you find it (in Byzel at night), buy a bunch of 'Poto Oil.' Kevin can handle healing most of the time though, and you probably dont really need saber spells with how strong your melee is going to be naturally plus the buffs and debuffs.
